The Loop NYC

Reclaiming NYC's streets for a driverless future

OVERVIEW

Looking ahead to a driverless future, Loop NYC reimagines Manhattan’s streets as a network of autonomous transit corridors, lush parks, and pedestrian-first public spaces.

This visionary proposal transforms the city’s aging infrastructure into a dynamic framework for clean mobility, civic life, and environmental resilience. Rather than streets choked by congestion and emissions, Loop NYC envisions a “new” New York where biophilic design, intelligent systems, and social connectivity reclaim the public realm and redefine urban life.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • New Green Pedestrian and Bike Paths 24 Miles
  • New Contiguous Green Space 200+ Acres
  • Reduction in Travel Time Up to 72%
  • Health Savings $3 Billion
  • Reduction in Vehicle-Related Injuries 50%+
Approach

APPROACH

We began by identifying Manhattan’s most heavily trafficked corridors and exploring how autonomous technology could ease strain on its aging infrastructure.

Our team proposed converting key east-west streets and expressway lanes into “micro-highways” reserved for self-driving electric buses, forming high-efficiency loops that enhance traffic flow and drastically reduce commute times. Simultaneously, we reallocated swaths of former roadways for public use, stitching together 200+ acres of new parks, walkways, and community spaces. With safety, environmental resilience, and accessibility as guiding principles, we embraced under- and overpasses to maintain uninterrupted pedestrian movement while supporting the city’s Vision Zero goals.

IMPACT

Loop NYC reimagines the streets of Manhattan as a platform for health, equity, and resilience.

With over 200 acres of new parks and more than 13 miles of pedestrian greenways, the proposal transforms everyday travel into an immersive urban experience. It cuts commute times by more than half while supporting mental and physical well-being through increased access to greenery. By removing pedestrians and cyclists from traditional traffic lanes, the plan significantly reduces vehicle-related injuries and advances the city’s Vision Zero goals. Beyond public health and safety, Loop NYC creates fertile ground for small businesses, public art, and community gathering. It fosters a vibrant street life that boosts economic opportunity and attracts global visitors. What began as a transportation solution ultimately becomes a catalyst for a greener, more inclusive, and more connected New York.
