Where nature meets quiet design

OVERVIEW
Located in Irvington, NY, this single-family extension involved the full reconstruction of a cherished sun room and roof terrace at the home of a private developer and his wife.
The original structure—a three-sided glass pavilion connecting a cozy library to the landscape beyond—had suffered irreparable water and insect damage. Though modest in size, it played a central role in the family’s daily life: a favorite space for reading, reflection, and transition between indoors and out. The client approached EDG with a clear request—to rebuild the wing with durable, resilient materials while preserving its emotional and spatial function. The redesign needed to provide a waterproof, long-lasting enclosure, serve as a discreet side entry, and maintain the upper-level terrace’s role as a private retreat for the primary suite. The client's professional background in development, paired with his wife's artistic sensibility, shaped the goals for a space that was both practical and deeply personal.

- Project Value $350,000 +
- Project Area 285 SF
- Year Completed 2023
- Scope Sun Room + Terrace Renovation

APPROACH
We approached the project with a focus on durability, elegance, and spatial continuity.
The new structure draws from the lightness and openness of the original, while integrating a robust, high-performance envelope. Ipe wood and copper cladding were selected for their durability and weather resistance, and a multi-layered waterproofing system was implemented to prevent future deterioration. Internally, our design team collaborated closely with the client’s wife to craft an interior that balanced natural light, tactile finishes, and understated elegance. The new space honors the original’s intimate scale while elevating its material and structural integrity, ensuring it continues to be a cherished part of the family’s daily rhythm.

IMPACT
The reimagined sun room and terrace seamlessly restore the home’s connection to its wooded setting, offering the family a rejuvenated space for relaxation, creativity, and quiet transition.
Beyond solving the structural issues, the project enriched the architectural character of the home—merging refined detailing with practical resilience. It stands as a testament to thoughtful, small-scale design with lasting impact, demonstrating how careful attention to materiality and proportion can elevate even the most personal of domestic spaces.
