OVERVIEW

Marcus Samuelsson, a widely acclaimed chef and a Top Chef Masters winner, turned to EDG when he decided to introduce his internationally acclaimed cuisine to the heart of Harlem.

Spanning 9,000 square feet, we designed the Red Rooster restaurant and event hall for efficiency in the back of the house while maximizing space for the front of the house. This evolution needed to unfurl within the constraints of the pre-existing building, all while adhering to strict building codes. Our team delivered on this challenge, allowing the restaurant to open on time and as planned while staying within a cost-effective framework. The project required innovative design and precise planning to align with Samuelsson’s high standards.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Project Value $4,000,000
  • Project Area 9,000
  • Completed 2012

APPROACH

The team focused on optimizing space, and money by conducting thorough research and code review.

Our meticulous planning ensured maximum seating capacity and streamlined all filings to avoid delays. Collaborating with interior designers and contractors, we applied our architectural design and project management expertise to align every aspect with the client’s vision and regulatory requirements.

IMPACT

Although deemed impossible by other consultants, we obtained approval from the NYC DOB for using the existing building vault space of almost 2,500 sq. ft., creating enormous value for a restaurant needing additional space.

Our mark was seen in nearly all aspects of the project, including review of the site for development before the lease, aiding in selecting the team of consultants and contractors, layout design, management of all filings (including the special permit for the event space), and structural design for extensive interior alterations. We gained over 200 sq. ft. of additional front-of-house space, and provided constant monitoring of the critical path to the grand opening, ensuring an on-time opening.
