Restoring Pier 40 For Future Generations

All Projects

OVERVIEW

Pier 40, a vital part of the Hudson River waterfront, is Manhattan’s largest parking facility, with 2,200 long-term parking spaces.

It offers extensive field space, hosts a recreation center, and houses the Hudson River Park Trust–which oversees the park and 36 piers. The trust tasked EDG with assessing and rehabilitating the aging Pier 40 parking deck, which is more than 40 years old and needed significant repairs. Understanding the pier’s role as a critical revenue source and community asset, our experts delivered long-term enhancements to durability while minimizing disruptions to operations at every step.

APPROACH

Our team carefully evaluated the pier’s existing conditions, understanding that every detail could significantly impact costs.

We considered multiple repair strategies to find the most cost-effective solution. The client’s priority for a watertight roof deck guided EDG design of a new top slab deck and installing a cutting-edge waterproofing system to meet current and future needs . As the largest revenue generator for the Hudson River Park Trust, it was essential for our team to phase construction and keep the parking facility operating with minimal disruptions.

IMPACT

The Pier 40 restoration project exceeded expectations, coming in under both the budget estimate and the contracted construction cost.

Our thorough assessment and strategic planning avoided design changes during construction and kept things moving efficiently. The timely completion of each design phase allowed Pier 40 to continue serving the community and the Hudson River Park Trust without interruption. The project reflects EDG’s commitment to precision and a team effort for our experts, the Trust’s team, and the contractor.
