Elevating and Illuminating a Forgotten Historic Pool

All Projects

OVERVIEW

Montauk Manor is an important landmark as the last major destination at the tip of Long Island, one built in the Tudor style and nestled amid seaside ambiance.

Our restoration team has been restoring the historic façade since 2008, including its iconic copper dome. Impressed with our restoration work, Montauk Manor engaged our design team to revitalize their indoor pool and amenity spaces. Low ceilings, antiquated materials, and lackluster lighting were just a few of the challenges we faced, along with a limited budget and the client's high aesthetic ambition. Our design delivered the desired sumptuousness anticipated by ownership, and we created a unified, lofty, and luxurious space for the guests—all while meeting the budget target.

Approach

APPROACH

We explored and borrowed from some of the Tudor cues and the surrounding marine setting in a design that focused on elevating the space and creating a sense of loftiness.

Originally large, low I-beams spanning the pool deck made the area feel cramped and oppressive. We countered this with peaked wood recessed inlays between the beams that create a four-sided, upward pitch (no reveal) with a central spine of light. The knife edge LED at the perimeter adds to the illusion of additional height, transcending the original claustrophobic conditions. Beveled white subway tiles oriented vertically create an upward lift to the walls while catching light in myriad ways. We further accented the walls with elegant blue porcelain onyx and a range of blues that match the pool's tiling. Our design team used complementary blue tiles as the base trim throughout all the spaces, connecting the pool and the seaside setting while creating a cohesive flow throughout.

Approach

IMPACT

Simple, cost-effective materials pair with clever design interventions to make the pool and amenity area feel more extensive and inviting than ever before.

The peaked forms elevate the space and invite visitors to relax, while expert staging and lighting deliver dynamic results at an economic price point. The result succeeded with proportions and placement, highlighting what worked and hiding what didn't. These enhancements work together to bring value to a forgotten space and create an investment in the building’s future for shareholders.

“Our pool area was transformed into an inviting and luxurious amenity by EDG, blending thoughtful design with cost-effective solutions that honor its historic setting.”
