Revitalizing A Historic Courtyard With Timeless Elegance

OVERVIEW
The Lotte New York Palace Hotel’s Villard Houses, designed by McKim, Mead & White in the late 19th century, are a storied piece of New York City’s architectural heritage.
Nestled between the north and south wings of the Italian Renaissance-inspired complex is the 5,000-square-foot courtyard, a space that has transformed from a horse-and-buggy turnaround to an iconic gathering place. In collaboration with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, our team led the latest courtyard renovation, which pays homage to its historic roots while introducing modern design elements. Inspired by Michelangelo's Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, the new design maintains the grandeur of the past while meeting contemporary needs.

APPROACH
We worked closely with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to honor the historical significance of the courtyard while updating it for modern use.
The new design simplifies and refines the central geometry, lowering and streamlining the fixed planters while maintaining a clear connection to the building’s Italian Renaissance style. The ground cover, crafted from durable, non-porous Portuguese limestone, was selected for its density and aesthetic appeal. Its darker main body is accented by lighter motifs, creating a subtle yet striking contrast. The landscape and lighting, executed in collaboration with Onelux, Lites in West, and Eponymous Practice, reflect the same balance of tradition and modernity. Discreet drainage solutions, including ring-shaped trench drains, were integrated to improve functionality without disrupting the visual flow.

IMPACT
The courtyard renovation enhances the historic character of the Villard Houses while creating a more accessible, contemporary space for guests to enjoy.
By blending the timeless elegance of Michelangelo’s Campidoglio with modern design solutions, we revitalized the courtyard into a dynamic and functional environment. The improved drainage and durable materials ensure longevity, while the updated planters and lighting add a fresh, inviting atmosphere. This thoughtful restoration honors the site's architectural legacy while providing a refined experience for today’s visitors.
