Humane Society of New York

A Tailored Office That Merges History And Modernity

OVERVIEW

This animal care facility required a thoughtful renovation of its 975-square-foot space to improve functionality, comfort, and accessibility for staff, visitors, and the animals in their care.

They wanted a warm and calming environment that felt inviting to both people and animals, moving away from the sterile, clinical feel often associated with veterinary spaces. With the lobby serving as the first point of contact for visitors, it needed to be functional, acoustically comfortable, and visually engaging. Our team made design features like custom bench seating, hand-drawn murals, and layered lighting central to the experience. We focused on creating a space that balances comfort, functionality, and a touch of personality which reflected the organization’s mission and care-driven culture.

APPROACH

Our design strategy balanced the organization’s need for a welcoming, functional environment with thoughtful solutions that improved acoustics, accessibility, and day-to-day operations.

The layout reimagines the facility’s compact footprint to create a welcoming flow between the lobby, exam rooms, pharmacy, and office areas, with carefully integrated acoustic treatments enhancing comfort for both visitors and animals. Custom bench seating along storefront windows offers both function and warmth, while interior doors and finishes were tailored to support access control and ADA compliance. Hand-drawn murals printed on textured wallpaper bring character and visual interest to the space, transforming plain walls into meaningful focal points. A mix of lighting fixtures and refined materials creates an atmosphere that is both calming and professional.
