H-Bridge Rehabilitation

Restoring A Vital Connection

OVERVIEW

The H-Bridge in Tarrytown, NY, is a crucial two-way vehicle and pedestrian crossing over the Metro North Hudson Line. Spanning nearly half a mile, the elevated roadway and sidewalk are vital for local transportation.

The Village of Tarrytown needed to rehabilitate the H-Bridge after discovering severe deterioration in its steel columns, girders, concrete roadway, sidewalks, and expansion joints. The dangerously corroded steel members immediately raised safety concerns, necessitating urgent shoring and repairs to prevent potential structural failures. The Village turned to EDG for these critical fixes, and our team delivered rapid results to keep drivers and pedestrians safe. Our long-term restoration plan divides the remaining work into strategic phases that align with Tarrytown’s budget and ensure continued longevity.

Approach

APPROACH

We opened communication with the Village of Tarrytown and the Metro North Railroad to gather necessary reports and to keep all parties informed.

Our team quickly identified the most critically damaged steel components, initiating emergency shoring and repairs to stabilize the structure. We thoroughly tested all affected steel and concrete, prioritizing areas in the worst condition. Our phased approach allowed us to address urgent repairs immediately while planning future restoration efforts within budget constraints.

IMPACT

Through swift action and strategic planning, our team stabilized the H-Bridge, ensuring its continued use.

The immediate repairs addressed the most severe threats to the bridge’s integrity, while our phased plan ensures long-term restoration without exceeding the village’s budget. This phasing was crucial in light of the estimated $6 million worth of work remaining. This rehabilitation secures a vital connection for Tarrytown’s residents and commuters, maintaining essential infrastructure and keeping residents safe.
