A refined transformation blending classic elegance with modern precision.

OVERVIEW
Blending historic charm with modern refinement, this renovation revitalizes the lobby into a more elegant and functional space.
EDG was engaged to address the challenges posed by the long entryway and irregular geometry resulting from the connection of two distinct buildings, requiring a design solution that brings cohesion to the space. Additionally, the vaulted ceilings and large skylight presented opportunities to introduce architectural refinements while maintaining the original character. The scope also includes refinishing the exterior canopy to create a seamless transition from the street to the building’s interior. With restoration work simultaneously underway on the façade and roof, careful coordination was required to maintain accessibility for residents.

By The Numbers
- Project Area 800 SF
- Location 21st Street
- 3D Printed Architectural Surface 8 ft x 4 ft
- Units Served 70+

APPROACH
Our team approached the design by re-aligning the ceiling’s centerlines along both north-south and east-west axes to create a more harmonious flow.
Inspired by classical design principles, we adapted the vault geometry to form circular openings for the skylight and dome, enhancing the natural light within the space. A custom 3D-printed medallion was introduced as a focal point, complemented by precise knife-edge detailing around the skylight and dome ceiling. Throughout construction, we ensured that residents could continue to access the lobby without disruption.

3D PRINTED ARCHITECTURAL SURFACE
A defining feature of the renovated lobby is a custom 3D-printed architectural surface, designed to add depth and artistry to the space.
EDG partnered with Synthesis, who used their advanced algorithms to generate a dynamic pattern of linear ridges that morph and transform within the surface’s boundary. The final design captures a sculptural, bouquet-like composition, seamlessly assembled to appear as a single monolithic surface. Embedded into the wall and framed by 3D-printed knife edges, the piece is further enhanced by integrated lighting that illuminates its intricate details, seamlessly blending into the overall aesthetic while showcasing the possibilities of digital fabrication.

Storage Solutions
A key concern with these renovations was accommodating an increasing number of package deliveries.
As with many buildings in the age of e-commerce, adapting a lobby to allow the doorman to receive, sort, and store large numbers of packages is becoming a significant concern. EDG designed a series of copper storage closets that stepped back through the lobby and became both a functional and decorative solution to this problem.

IMPACT
EDG’s design transforms the lobby into a refined, harmonious space that seamlessly blends classical elegance with modern precision.
By re-aligning architectural elements, we resolved longstanding geometric inconsistencies, creating a balanced and visually striking entryway. The introduction of vertical fluted tiles under the vaults adds depth and sophistication, while reflective materials around the skylight cleverly conceal existing irregularities. Warm-toned finishes enhance the ambiance, making the space both inviting and timeless. Despite construction constraints, EDG delivered a high-end design that elevates the building’s character and enhances the everyday experience for residents.
